Haley Craig takes field events at state track meet

Haley Craig of North Harrison had an impressive showing at the state track meet, winning the shot-put and the discus.

North Harrison junior Haley Craig had another dominating performance at the Class 1 state track meet Friday and Saturday in Jefferson City.

Craig won her second straight championships in both the discus and shot-put, easily defeating the competition at the Dwight T. Reed Stadium on the campus of Lincoln University.

South Harrison placed in five events at the Class 2 state track meet on the same field.

South Harrison’s 4×100-meter relay team finished third with a time of 44:05, breaking the old school record set in 2001. Members of the team were J.D. Johnson, Bryce Kirk, Tyler Preston and Stanton Blake.

Lady Bulldog Mariah Sunderland placed third in the pole vault with a jump of 10 feet, breaking the old school record of 9 feet, 9 inches, set by Sunderland during the state meet last season.

Craig had a throw of 39 feet, 4 inches in the shot put on Friday, beating Jordan Long of Nodaway-Holt by almost two feet. The next day, Craig had a throw of 125 feet, 7 inches in the discus, beating runner up Elizabeth Maneval of Jasper by four feet.

South Harrison runner Stanton Blake took fourth place in the 100m dash with a time of 11.28 seconds. Kasey McFall also took sixth place in the shot put with a throw of 46 feet, 4 inches.

Hardin-Central won the Class 1 boys championship, while New Covenant Academy took first in girls’ events. South Harrison placed 12th overall. Skyline won the boys’ Class 2 title, while Father Tolton won the girls’ championship. The South Harrison boys title for 15th.

Other county athletes qualifying for the state meet with Hailey Burrows of Gilman City, high jump; Payton Craig, North Harrison, triple jump; Logan Carlson, East Harrison, high jump; Caid Selby, East Harrison, 400m run, and the East Harrison 4×200 relay team of Dallas Bodrov, Carlson, Justin Roberts and Selby.
