Raytown, MO: Richard “Dick” Gardner, 84, of Raytown, Mo., passed away peacefully on February 17, 2024.
Dick Gardner was born on June 15, 1939 at home in New Hampton, Mo., to Kathleen (Scott) Gardner and Everett Gardner. His dad was the town barber in New Hampton, and his mom worked in the post office where his grandfather served as Postmaster. He talked often of his youth and the time he spent with friends and family in and around New Hampton. After graduating from Southwest High School in Bethany, Mo., Dick served in the United States Army and then in the Army Reserves. He is a graduate of UMKC Pharmacy school where he served in officer positions of the Kappa Psi pharmacy fraternity. He retired in June 2007 after working as a pharmacist for over 50 years, primarily at MacKay Drugs in Independence and then Hy-Vee Pharmacy in Raytown.
Dick loved music and played many instruments throughout his life including ukulele, trombone, drums, and harmonica. He enjoyed nature, especially sailing on Lake Jacomo, gardening, and local wildlife. He was a life-long fan of the Chiefs, the Royals, and University of Missouri sports teams and followed many different types of sports and teams. His biggest joys were his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and he took pride and celebrated their many accomplishments.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Kathleen and Everett. He is survived by his children Tim (Cristan) Gardner, Aimee (Michael) Buck, Erin (Keith) Dorrian, his nine grandchildren, Brittany (Kevin) Makin, Jonathan, Reagan, Grant, Stephen, Jack, Catherine, Carter, Aubrey, and three great-grandchildren, Peyton, Parker, and Quinn. He will be greatly missed by many. The family will be hosting a Celebration of Life for Dick in Lee’s Summit, Mo., on April 21st. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or Missouri Department of Conservation.
