Marjorie Deloris Shields, daughter of Birt and Eliza Jane (Vinzant) Ellis, was born in Decatur County, Iowa, northwest of Lineville, on December 8, 1922, and passed away on June 4, 2015, at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, Iowa, at the age of 92 years.
Marjorie lived most of her life in the Lineville, Iowa, area. She attended the Elm Country School in Decatur County and was a 1940 graduate of Lineville High School. After high school, she attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, receiving her teachers certification. She taught school in the country schools of Lone Star, Jefferson Center, and Elm from 1941 until 1950. She then took time off from her vocation in education to raise her nine children and in 1971 returned to education at the Lineville-Clio School working in the office as an administrative assistant, retiring in 2005.
Marjorie was united in marriage to Lawrence Lee Grant Shields on August 24, 1948. Lawrence preceded her in death on January 23, 1985. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Pamela Jones; a grandson, Brent Allen Shields; three brothers, Kenneth, Wayne, and Earl Ellis; and by four sisters, Verda Rheshinski, Dorothy Davis, Flossie McClain, and Ida Hutchinson. She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Shields of Bethany, Missouri, and Lisa Davis (and son-in-law, Mark) of Springfield, Missouri; six sons, Jim Shields (and daughter-in-law, Judy), Jack Shields (and daughter-in-law, Diane), David Shields (and daughter-in-law, Kathy), and Richard Shields (and daughter-in-law, Brenda), all of Lineville, Iowa, Randy Shields (and daughter-in-law, Anna May) of South Lineville, Missouri, and Dennis Shields of Bethany, Missouri; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and by other relatives and friends.
Besides her work in education and raising her family, Marjorie enjoyed watching the Jeopardy Game Show on TV, reading, coin collecting, quilting and sewing, working crossword puzzles, putting together jigsaw puzzles, gardening and canning.
Graveside services and burial will be held on Sunday, June 7, 2015, at 2:30 P.M., at the Evergreen Cemetery in Lineville, Iowa, with Pastor Aaron Stark officiating, under the direction of the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Service of Lineville, Iowa. Following at 4:00 P.M., there will be a Celebration of Life gathering at the Lineville Community Center.
Open visitation will be at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel in Lineville, Iowa, from 8:30 A.M. until 2:00 P.M., on Sunday.
