Katherine Louise “Kathy” Hammond, daughter of John Truman and Mary Bernice (Caughlan) Stanturf, was born in Mercer County, Missouri, in the Topsy community on September 9, 1920, and passed away on February 18, 2016, at her home in Spickard, Missouri, at the age of 95 years.
In 1927, Kathy moved with her parents to North Dakota where her father taught school on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. She lived there until returning to Missouri in 1940. She attended high school in Minot, North Dakota, and Princeton, Missouri.
On March 16, 1941, Kathy was united in marriage to Eldon Earl Hammond. In 1951, they purchased a farm in Medicine Township of Mercer County where they lived until they sold the farm and moved to Spickard in 1992. Eldon preceded her in death on April 16, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ed Hammond; a daughter, Louise Rogers; a son-in-law, Donald Rogers; a grandson, Brad Hammond; two brothers, John Winton “Billy” Stanturf who died in infancy and Ted Stanturf; and by two sisters, Ellen Bernice Mattinson and Betsy Taylor. She is survived by her son, Steve Hammond (and daughter-in-law, Linda) of Trenton, Missouri; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Hammond of Blue Springs, Missouri; 7 grandchildren, Ken Hammond (and wife, Jane), Mona Anderson (and husband, Scott), Susan Riley (and husband, Terry), Patricia Abernathy (and husband, Dennis), Mike Rogers (and wife, Shelly), Cheri Hammond (and husband, Ted Morgan), and Anita Osborn (and companion, Dave Alley); 24 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
Kathy was a member of the Spickard Christian Church; served for 29 years on the Mercer County Library Board; served on the Mercer County Extension Council; was a 4-H leader for over 25 years; served on the Mercer County Allied Arts Council as chairperson; was the founder of the Mercer County Arts Buffs and promoter for over 30 years; and taught women’s woodworking classes and painting in a four county area. She also enjoyed rug weaving, fishing, gardening, attending her Church, and spending time with her family.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 22, 2016, at 1:00 P.M., at the Spickard Christian Church with Pastors Sean Hammond and David Binkley officiating, under the direction of the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Service of Princeton, Missouri. Burial will be in the Harris, Missouri, Cemetery.
Open visitation and viewing will begin at 8:30 A.M., Sunday, at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel in Princeton where the family visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Sunday evening.
