Gordon Leslie “Les” Giles, 75, of Brimson, MO passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at North Care Hospice House, Kansas City, MO.
He was born on May 11, 1940 in Blue Ridge of Harrison County, MO the son of Joseph William and Lois Lavon (Preston) Giles. He graduated from Mt. Moriah High School in 1958. He enlisted in the United States Army on September 9, 1958. He attended basic training at Ft. Hood in Texas and upon completion of basic training, he served overseas in South Korea as a Medical Aidman until he was Honorably Discharged on July 22, 1960.
He returned home to own and operate the garage and gas station and drive the tanker truck in Brimson for several years while he attended college. He graduated from Trenton Junior College (now North Central Missouri College) in Trenton, MO and then received his Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Arts from Northeast Missouri State (now Truman State University) in Kirksville, MO. He went on to teach Industrial Arts at Jameson High School in Jameson, MO for 5 years. He then obtained his real estate broker’s license and sold real estate for the Gerald Gooch Realty Company and later for the Earl Robinson Realty Company. He most recently had been the Transportation Coordinator for the North Central Missouri Mental Health for the last several years.
Les loved to work on the farm and spend time hunting and fishing with his family. He was also a little league coach for several years.
He served for many years as an assistant Boy Scout leader and then served for 15 years as the Scoutmaster of Troop 99 in Trenton, MO. He earned the Ma-Has-Ka District Award of Merit and the District Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Service. He received the Silver Beaver Award from the Pony Express Council. He was a long time member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say (the Honor Camping Society of Camp Geiger) where he held the rank of Medicine Man. His tribal name was Straight Tomahawk. He also served on the Tribal Council and the White Coup Society. He took great pride in helping young men to become Eagle Scouts and to guide them on the right path in life.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
He married Mary Ann Stoner in Mt. Moriah, MO on October 21, 1961; she survives of the home. Other survivors include two sons, Steven Kent, Trenton, MO and Tommy Lynn, Brimson, MO; a grandson they raised, Steven Kyle, Liberty, Mo; other grandchildren include, Heather McPhearson, Courtney Clause and Mason Giles all of Trenton, MO, Heidi Dotson, Cainsville, MO, Garrett Giles, Columbia, MO, and Loren Giles, Norman, OK; 8 great grandchildren; brothers, George, Marvin, and Jim Giles; and sisters, Mary (Chuck) Lieffring, June (Bruce) Buntin, Sue (Steve) Miller, Joan Clayton, and Carol (Larry) Brickey.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 22 at the First Baptist Church of Trenton, MO. Burial with Military Rites will follow in Lloyd Cemetery, Mt. Moriah, MO. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Roberson Funeral Home, Bethany, MO.
