Trevor Place, who was appointed sheriff after serving as a Bethany police officer, won his first full term at Harrison County sheriff in Tuesday’s Republican primary election
Place defeated his deputy sheriff, Eric Rimmer, by a margin of 1,181 votes to 573.
The two colleagues in the sheriff’s office agreed on most law enforcement issues—both seeing drugs as a growing problem in the county—and carried on a congenial campaign. Place was appointed sheriff by the County Commission following the death of Josh Eckerson.
In one of the surprises of the night, Eagleville farmer Mike Smith upset veteran North District Commissioner Rick Smith for re-election. Mike Smith received 470 votes to 405 for Rick Smith.
In another close race, incumbent County Assessor Lila Craig held off a challenge by Hannah Thompson for re-election by a vote of 1,051 to 708.
