Out of service: The merry-go-round at Memorial Park, which has thrilled generations of children, has been closed down while park employees try to find out if it can be brought back to life. Michael Lykins, park caretaker, said his research found that the merry-go-round was constructed at a machine shop in Fairfield, Iowa, early in the last century It has been at the park for at least 80 or 90 years. The city’s insurance carrier has recommended that the city discontinue using the ride because of safety issues. Lykins said it will be up to the park board to decide whether to pursue repairs. He said a similar ride in Fairfield has been placed on exhibition as a historical landmark.
