Hunter Langfitt and Russell Hillyard prepare to take down the last remaining pine tree of a stand of pines that had graced the front of the First Baptist Church for more than 60 years. The trees had been showing signs of disease in recent years, and church officials decided that they had to be cut down to protect the church. At the time the trees were planted, the property was occupied by a large, frame building that had been the site of the old Wood Hospital and later the Sullivan Rest Home. The church built there in the early 1960s. Gerald Parker, a former church trustee, said the three pine trees had been fully developed by the time the church was located there. Earlier photos show the early stages of the trees when they were in front of the Wood Hospital in 1923.
