
Boom times for downtown: Cars were parallel parked on the street while the Jefferson bus unloaded passengers at the Zimmerlee Cafe in an early photo of the east side of the Square. The Jefferson Highway once ran through downtown Bethany. There has been speculation that outlaws like Bonnie and Clyde may have later passed through Bethany on their crime spree in the 1930s.

This weekend’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Jefferson Highway reminds me of the stories that I used to hear about the days when Bethany was a wide-open town with open gambling and rowdy nightclubs on just about every corner.
