Harrison County, MO: The countdown for Christmas begins this week with the Black Friday sales and preparations by local organizations for special events in the days leading up to Christmas. Here are some of the activities.
Senior Center pie sales
The cooks at the Harrison County Senior Center are getting ready to fill orders for pecan and pumpkin pies that will be available for the Christmas dinner tables across the county.
Pie orders must be made by Dec. 21 to be picked up at the senior center.
Angela Glenn, director of the senior center, said the sale of the $10 pies will be used to support the Meals on Wheels program. Some 80 meals are delivered each day to local residents, and about 20 persons are served each day at the congregate dining room.
Turkey Trot on Thursday
After a year’s interruption because of the pandemic, the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot will return to the South Harrison High School this Thursday, Nov. 25, with a 5K run and walk and a kid’s fun run.
The Turkey Trot will raise funds for the Harrison County Food Pantry. The Hy-Vee Food Store is sponsoring the event.
Race day check-in will begin at 7:45 a.m. Thursday morning. The 5K run begins at 8:30 followed by the kids’ dash for children 12 and under at 9:15 a.m.
Bounty basket distribution
The New Hampton Christian Church put together Bounty Baskets to be distributed to families in the area before Thanksgiving.
Church members began assembling the food baskets after worship services at noon on Sunday. Cars lined up in downtown Bethany on Sunday afternoon as area residents picked up their baskets.
Rick Smith, coordinator of the event, said about 450 baskets were assembled for distribution in Gentry and Worth counties.
