Ryan Cutter, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Pleasant Valley, discusses the characteristics of thunderstorms during a meeting for volunteer weather spotters and emergency service personnel Monday night at the NTA office in Bethany. Cutter said the key to development of a tornado is rotation in the super cells rather than disorganized clouds hanging down. He said the weather service uses social media such as Twitter among other methods to get out alerts about storms to the public and also to obtain information from the public about weather activity. The storm spotting training session drew about 45 persons.
