Princeton, MO: Volunteers have published the latest edition of the Pioneer Press, which comes out annually before the Calamity Jane Days festival in Princeton on Sept. 16-18.
This year’s publication honors Mercer County native Robert Kauffman who has coordinated the Pioneer Press for the past several years.
The 24-page edition was printed by the Bethany Printing Company. Angela Ragan of the Republican-Clipper’s staff designed the publication.
Kauffman supervises the Pioneer Press from his home in Madison, Wisconsin, where he is a retired professor at the University of Wisconsin.
Kauffman graduated from Princeton High School and attended Iowa State University where he was a member of the Marching Cyclones. He met his late wife, Phyllis Smith of Bethany, at Ames while both were attending Iowa State.
Following service in the Air Force, he returned to college to receive a PhD in animal science from Wisconsin. He continued his management of family farms in Mercer County.
He later produced a docudrama about the life of Calamity Jane, the famous frontier character that hailed from Mercer County.
Copies of the Pioneer Press are available for $2 at the Republican-Clipper office.
