Gardner, KS: Matthew “John” Stubler III, 62, of Gardner, KS, passed away February 2, 2022, at his home.
John was born July 13, 1959, in Kansas City, KS, to Matthew “Matt” John Stubler, Jr., and Glenda Kay (Robertson). He grew up in Belton, MO, and graduated from Belton High School in 1977. He married Virginia “Ginny” Hinrichs on August 6, 1983, in Oklahoma City, OK.
John’s professional career spanned several decades, from Honeywell in Olathe, KS, to being the owner of Sundance Professional Services for 20 years. He and his crew would travel the country, building large commercial facilities; the crew also spent several months in Dubai. On that trip, he was able to visit Egypt and the Great Pyramids. He was a talented woodworker and could build or repair just about anything.
John was a talented musician. He started guitar lessons when he was in junior high school, eventually playing the 12 string and writing music. He played in several local bands, including The June Holle Band and The Great Pretenders. His favorite musical duet partner was his long-time friend Jeannie (Lewis) Kautt.
John was an avid reader and historian. He loved to read books about the Revolutionary War, and had an amazing capacity to remember so many facts about the various historical figures and battles. One of his goals was to walk the Freedom Trail in Boston and visit all the historical sites associated with the Revolutionary War. He also studied his worn copy of the Bible on a daily basis. He and Ginny spent many years working on the family genealogy, traveling through northern Missouri, photographing cemeteries and compiling family stories.
Family and friends were John’s biggest passion. He would drop what he was doing to help if called, anything from installing a generator in a blizzard, to helping family members with remodeling projects. He never met a person he didn’t call “friend,” and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He and Ginny hosted 4th of July festivities at their property in Edgerton, KS, every year, which was a big deal for the young nieces and nephews. He loved all animals and leaves behind his dog Winston, and cats Freddie and Charlie.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Kay, in 1974. He is survived by his wife, Ginny, of the home; and father and step-mother, Matt and Shelda Stubler of Kansas City, MO. John was a loving father and grandfather to Ginny’s children, Christina (David) Stubler, Gardner, KS; Robert (Char) McDermott, Gardner, KS; Stephanie (Matt) Douglas, Eudora, KS; grandchildren Jordan (Chris), Courtney (Cole), Jarod, Dylan, and Taylor; as well as great-granddaughter Henley and another on the way. He is also survived by his sister Karen (Tom) Bellmer, Overland Park, KS; brother Bob (Kari) Stubler, Parrish, FL; and brother David (Christina) Stubler, Gardner, KS; nieces and nephews Kevin (Karen), Jack, Clara, Sloan, Julianna, Tyler (Em), Kyle, Reygan, and Emily (Eric); and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation and funeral services will be held at the Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS, on Tuesday, February 15. Visitation will be held from 11-1; with the funeral service at 1 p.m., and graveside service immediately following at Edgerton Cemetery, Edgerton, KS. There will also be a gathering at the Warren Place in Gardner after the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
