Rare visitor: This immature Black-crowned Night-Heron decided to forage a little early Thursday evening, Sept. 6th. When feeding, they stretch their necks out and snap at their prey. They are largely crepuscular and nocturnal.
Northwest Missouri heron’s often spend their days perched on tree limbs or concealed among foliage and branches. They forage in the evening and at night, in water, on mudflats, and on land.–Republican-Clipper photo
