Bethany, MO: Randy Steinman, second from right, governor of Rotary District 6040 from Independence, Missouri, presented a message to the Bethany Rotary Club Thursday afternoon at the senior citizen center. Steinman and club president, Mike Mattson, right, welcomed the club’s newest members, Doug Brandt of HCCH, and Audrey Gibson of NL Holdings, to the civic organization. Steinman, a political consultant, pointed out that the organization’s theme for the year is “Create Hope in the World,” as stated in the banner he is holding. One of Rotary International’s major accomplishments is the near eradication of polio worldwide. When the organization began its Polio Plus program in 1985, each year there were more than 100,000 of new cases of polio in the world in more than 100 countries. Through Rotary’s vaccination program in cooperation with philanthropists Bill and Linda Gates, there were only four cases of polio diagnosed in two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan during the past year.–Republican-Clipper photo
